The Best Sit to Stand Desk – Which Variation is Right For You?

After ranting on the dangers of sitting too long and the benefits the standing desk provides, you naturally would want to get your hands on one. But if you missed it, without further ado, read it here.

If you’ve made the big decision to invest in a standing desk or still chewing on the idea of one, I’m sure you’ll find yourself in a position of uncertainty as to which one you should get, as I did. After all, there are a few variations to the standing desk as we’ve mentioned in our last article.

The differences can be confusing. So the pending question remains, “Which variation should I get?”

Well, it depends on what you’re looking for. Let’s delve into each one to figure out the best sit to stand desk for you.

Sit to stand Desk

First up, we have the sit to stand desk or standing desk. I won’t boggle you down with the details as we’ve talked about it in greater lengths in Sit to Stand Desk Converter – Is It Worth it?

The standing desk is, essentially, just a tall desk that affords you the ability to be on your feet as you work. It is static, therefore, it is not portable and does not offer you the means to sit down when you’ve had enough of standing ( unless you have a really tall chair). Some standing desks do come with wheels to enable you to move the desk around and you can also lock the wheels in place to prevent it from moving.

Who is it for?

If you have no problem being on your feet and work in a fast-paced environment where you are constantly moving around, the standing desk would be a great option for you. They usually work well in work settings such as engineering departments, or construction offices; these jobs typically require that you are on your feet and constantly moving about.

Joy Desk by Stand Steady – Modern Home Office Standing Desk Workstation with Storage Cubbies! – 47.5″ x 41.5″

  • Pros: Helps you be on your feet, keeps you agile and active, can be mobile if you get the ones with the wheels so you can easily move your desk around as you move, wheel locking capabilities
  • Cons: It is not adjustable so it does not give you the option to lower it to normal sitting height; static

Adjustable Sit to Stand Desk

Next up, we have the adjustable sit to stand desks or adjustable standing desks. They are trendier than the standing desk and boasts more features. As we’ve mentioned before, the adjustable standing desk remains a desk for standing with the added benefit of being adjustable. You can adjust the height to fit your comfortable position. This feature alone makes the adjustable standing desks highly desirable. Switching back and forth between a sitting and standing position gives your body the workout it needs to remain active and keeps your brain focus and sharp.

Who is it for?

As more companies make the transition from regular, static desks to the standing desks, the adjustable standing desks are slowly gaining traction as a favorite and can be found in most modern offices and home offices. The adjustable standing desks are often used in settings similar to an account payable professional workplace. They often have to put in long hours crunching numbers and sit for long periods of time which can be a painful process. The adjusting feature of the desk affords them the ability to switch it up.

Some adjustable sit to stand desks come with wheels to keep you in motion. This type of desk works very well in common workplaces such as hospitals and are often used by nurses and doctors who are multitasking masters with the need to be in many places at once. They often have a lot of charting to do and have a lot of patients to account for. The adjustable standing desk with wheels allows them to move their desks around while adjusting it according to their needs.

  • Pros : Gives you the option to sit and stand while working, some are mobile with wheel locking capabilities.
  • Cons : Although the ones I’ve listed are manual, I found most of them are usually electric. Therefore, no power no rise.

Sit to Stand Desk Converter

The most useful and dynamic of the standing desks, is the sit-to-stand desk converter, or adjustable desk converter. It is also my favorite as the sit to stand desk converter transforms any desk into an adjustable standing desk.

Who is it for?

The adjustable desk converter can work for most office and home work environments. You most likely already have a perfectly good sitting desk at home or at your office and are very reluctant to replace it. And why should you? The good news is you won’t have to. The adjustable standing desk converter offers you the versatility of building on top of your original desk to make it work for you. I’m sure you can appreciate how convenient that is.

One caveat with the adjustable standing desk converter is that it may take up space on your desk. Unless your desk is wide enough to accommodate the converter, you may have to compromise on the surface area of you current desk for the converter. If that is an issue, then the sit to stand desk converter may not be the best fit for you.

Bicycle sit to stand desk ?

Last but not least, we have the bicycle sit to stand desk or bicycle adjustable standing desk. Yes, you’ve read this right. It was no typo. The bicycle adjustable standing desk is now a thing. New ideas are constantly being challenged and thus revolutionizing the way we typically do things or think about certain concepts. And in the midst of these inventions, is the bicycle adjustable desks.

Perhaps it is not so surprising to you as the concept of exercising while working is not entirely new. But it usually requires that you do one or the other; not both- workout and work! And you gotta admit, a bicycle adjustable standing desk merits a pause.

In my quest for wanting to know all about the different standing desks that are being made, I stumbled upon the Exercise Desk Bike by Flexispot. This piece of ingenuity allows you to comfortably work while working out. Now that’s serious business. I’ve already made plans to give it a try. Can you blame me? This would be perfect for a home/work setting and I, for one, am eager to get my hands on one. But I digress.

    • Pros: Keeps you active and your heart pumping, gets your creative juices flowing
    • Cons: Does not appear to be very portable

The sit to stand desk will work perfectly for someone that works in a fast-paced environment and needs to stay on their feet; whereas, the adjustable standing desk will work for any long-hour work setting. It allows you to toggle between a sitting and standing position which gives your body the workout it needs to remain active. Personally, the converter was the perfect choice for my needs. I was already attached to my desk; therefore, I was not too keen on parting with it. Furthermore, desk space was not really a concern since I don’t usually need the extra space. It worked out beautifully for me and I have not regretted my choice.

Hopefully at this point, you now have a better idea as to which variation works for you. My question unto you is, “What best sit to stand desk invention have you heard about ?”

Let me know in the comments below, I would love to hear about them all!

  1. I need the Deskcise now!! I’ve never heard of it before, it helps you do two things at the same time. Especially since I always make excuses about working out, now I have no excuse, thank you for sharing this post Steven!!

    • Hi Esther,

My pleasure – I did not know about it either until my research.

Perfect combo of work and working out. Staying fit while you put forth your awesome ideas.

      Glad you enjoyed my article.

  2. That is so cool an exercise bike workstation? Lol
Thtas futuristic to me. But i like the idea and this could be a very effective way to keep the person in better health. While completing whatever task it is that they must do while sitting.

I’m ordering one today. My wife is going to kill me but hey at least ill die in shape haha.

  3. Hey Steven,
The bike-desk is hilarious.. love it! – Could be pretty handy working at home watching TV for example. For the work-place though I think the adjustable Sit to Stand desk converter looks best, as it’s nice to be able to have the choice whether to sit or stand. Presumably it helps to prevent back-ache would you say?

    • Hi Dave!

I agree! The bike-desk is surreal. Could be ideal for typical day to day tasks to prevent you from remaining sedentary.

The Sit to Stand desk converter and the adjustable desk both gives you the option of sitting or standing. And because it allows you to transition from one or the other, it does help alleviate back-ache and body sores as your body is always alert and on the move.

Therefore, you are putting less pressure on your back and waist.

I can say the converter has been a friend to my back since I made the transition.

      Thank you for your comment.

  4. Nice article with great information. I had not heard of the exercise desk before. That is something I really need to consider. I work at home full time on my computer and being able to move while working could really be beneficial to me.

    Thanks so much.

    • Hi there, Kevin!

Sounds like we’re not alone in not having heard of the Exercise Desk.

I agree, making small changes such as being able to move while working goes a long way in improving your efficiency and improving your health.

I am glad you found my article informative and helpful.

      Thank you for reaching out.

  5. Great information and our society needs more people using these. I have a Veridesk and I absolutely love it. It really helps to get the circulation flowing in your legs when you can move around.

I would just add that the floor mats are a must have if you will be standing for a long time. Great article and a much needed one.

    • Hello Rick!

I couldn’t agree more. These adjustable/standing desks really do help get and keep your blood pumping.

In my next upcoming posts, I will be sure to cover the additional items that can help complement the desks such as the floor mats. They are much needed.

I am glad you found my post helpful.

      Thank you for reaching out.

  6. I have a desk converter in my home office and love it. Well… I must confess that I still need to make myself get up once in a while. I found a solution for that by asking my Amazon Alexa to give me a reminder every 90 minutes. It works but a little embarrassing if I have someone in the office and all of a sudden Alexa blurts out “Get off your butt!”

    • Hello Leissa!

haha thank you for sharing. I can only imagine the mortification of having Alexa speaking out loud your reminder.
However, there is no shame in using Alexa. Anything that serves as a reminder is a good place to start. Who cares if someone hears it- at least you are in the right track of improving your health as you work LOL.

You’ll find yourself breaking into a natural routine soon without needing Alexa. Your body usually tells you when it has has enough of sitting.

I tend to stand more than I sit. Therefore, when my feet hurts, I break by sitting for a few minutes and then stand up again.
It is said that it is best to stand more than you sit. The goal is to move about!

      Thank you for your comment.

  7. I don’t even know the bicycle sit to stand desk exist! It is something I can use as I am a health freak and I feel so guilty at times when I don’t have time for exercise. Having this enables me to exercise while working, I can now multitask without having to sacrifice my exercising when I am busy. Great sharing, looking forward to more sharing from yours!

    • Hi there, Kenny!

I, too, am a health maniac always looking for ways to optimize my health but don’t always get a chance to. I agree that the bicycle-sit-to-stand desk appears to offer the convenience of both working out and working. No more excuses!

Glad you enjoyed my post- many more coming.

      Thanks for your comment.

  8. I think I need the sit to stand desk. With the work of I do, I definitely need it and will go for one. Thanks for sharing these ideas. I know it will give me a relief from pains I get through my sitting position in office.

    • Hi there, Peter!

Absolutely! That is the very same reason why more people are transitioning. The pain of sitting too long really is a work killer as the pain forces too much attention in trying to find relief. The sit to stand desk gives you that relief you seek without any pause to your work.

I am glad my post was helpful to you.

      Thank you for commenting.

  9. Stephen, your article will find a solution to my constant backache due to working sat down all day, thanks so much. I wasn’t aware so many people had the same issue. My problem stems from being on my feet all day working in a shop for nigh on 30 years therefore my back can’t seem to cope with sitting whilst working.
I think the Adjustable Sit to Stand Desk would be perfect for my situation delivering the option to sit or stand which will help me immensely whilst also able to support the weight of my desktop computer. In fact it’s a very similar style to which I work with now but my present one doesn’t adjust.
    Thanks for your help,

    • Hello Simon!

I agree! I know too well of your pain, my friend. I had the very same issue. Putting long hours of work with a static desk/chair is just not ideal. You should work to live and not vice versa. Therefore, optimal ways on cushioning the blow of working for hours at a time should always be considered.

I would recommend the adjustable sit to stand desk converter if you are not looking to replace your desk entirely. If you do not mind replacing your desk, then the adjustable standing desk is the way to go!

I am glad I was able to help.

      Thank you for your comment.

  10. Man how I wish I could’ve heard or known about this years ago when I was working. Seems like a legitimate life saver and back saver for that matter.

  11. I love the idea of the Bikecise! I want to try it but wonder if I’ll be able to focus and/or type while I’m peddling?
