After ranting on the dangers of sitting too long and the benefits the standing desk provides, you naturally would want to get your hands on one. But if you missed it, without further ado, read it here.
If you’ve made the big decision to invest in a standing desk or still chewing on the idea of one, I’m sure you’ll find yourself in a position of uncertainty as to which one you should get, as I did. After all, there are a few variations to the standing desk as we’ve mentioned in our last article.
The differences can be confusing. So the pending question remains, “Which variation should I get?”
Well, it depends on what you’re looking for. Let’s delve into each one to figure out the best sit to stand desk for you.
Sit to stand Desk
First up, we have the sit to stand desk or standing desk. I won’t boggle you down with the details as we’ve talked about it in greater lengths in Sit to Stand Desk Converter – Is It Worth it?
The standing desk is, essentially, just a tall desk that affords you the ability to be on your feet as you work. It is static, therefore, it is not portable and does not offer you the means to sit down when you’ve had enough of standing ( unless you have a really tall chair). Some standing desks do come with wheels to enable you to move the desk around and you can also lock the wheels in place to prevent it from moving.
Who is it for?
If you have no problem being on your feet and work in a fast-paced environment where you are constantly moving around, the standing desk would be a great option for you. They usually work well in work settings such as engineering departments, or construction offices; these jobs typically require that you are on your feet and constantly moving about.
- Pros: Helps you be on your feet, keeps you agile and active, can be mobile if you get the ones with the wheels so you can easily move your desk around as you move, wheel locking capabilities
- Cons: It is not adjustable so it does not give you the option to lower it to normal sitting height; static
Adjustable Sit to Stand Desk
Next up, we have the adjustable sit to stand desks or adjustable standing desks. They are trendier than the standing desk and boasts more features. As we’ve mentioned before, the adjustable standing desk remains a desk for standing with the added benefit of being adjustable. You can adjust the height to fit your comfortable position. This feature alone makes the adjustable standing desks highly desirable. Switching back and forth between a sitting and standing position gives your body the workout it needs to remain active and keeps your brain focus and sharp.
Who is it for?
As more companies make the transition from regular, static desks to the standing desks, the adjustable standing desks are slowly gaining traction as a favorite and can be found in most modern offices and home offices. The adjustable standing desks are often used in settings similar to an account payable professional workplace. They often have to put in long hours crunching numbers and sit for long periods of time which can be a painful process. The adjusting feature of the desk affords them the ability to switch it up.
Some adjustable sit to stand desks come with wheels to keep you in motion. This type of desk works very well in common workplaces such as hospitals and are often used by nurses and doctors who are multitasking masters with the need to be in many places at once. They often have a lot of charting to do and have a lot of patients to account for. The adjustable standing desk with wheels allows them to move their desks around while adjusting it according to their needs.
- Pros : Gives you the option to sit and stand while working, some are mobile with wheel locking capabilities.
- Cons : Although the ones I’ve listed are manual, I found most of them are usually electric. Therefore, no power no rise.
Sit to Stand Desk Converter
The most useful and dynamic of the standing desks, is the sit-to-stand desk converter, or adjustable desk converter. It is also my favorite as the sit to stand desk converter transforms any desk into an adjustable standing desk.
Who is it for?
The adjustable desk converter can work for most office and home work environments. You most likely already have a perfectly good sitting desk at home or at your office and are very reluctant to replace it. And why should you? The good news is you won’t have to. The adjustable standing desk converter offers you the versatility of building on top of your original desk to make it work for you. I’m sure you can appreciate how convenient that is.
One caveat with the adjustable standing desk converter is that it may take up space on your desk. Unless your desk is wide enough to accommodate the converter, you may have to compromise on the surface area of you current desk for the converter. If that is an issue, then the sit to stand desk converter may not be the best fit for you.
- Pros- Portable; you can take it from home to work and vice versa, turns any desk into a functioning adjustable standing desk. It can be both electrical and mechanical.
- Cons– Takes up space on your desk
Bicycle sit to stand desk ?
Last but not least, we have the bicycle sit to stand desk or bicycle adjustable standing desk. Yes, you’ve read this right. It was no typo. The bicycle adjustable standing desk is now a thing. New ideas are constantly being challenged and thus revolutionizing the way we typically do things or think about certain concepts. And in the midst of these inventions, is the bicycle adjustable desks.
Perhaps it is not so surprising to you as the concept of exercising while working is not entirely new. But it usually requires that you do one or the other; not both- workout and work! And you gotta admit, a bicycle adjustable standing desk merits a pause.
In my quest for wanting to know all about the different standing desks that are being made, I stumbled upon the Exercise Desk Bike by Flexispot. This piece of ingenuity allows you to comfortably work while working out. Now that’s serious business. I’ve already made plans to give it a try. Can you blame me? This would be perfect for a home/work setting and I, for one, am eager to get my hands on one. But I digress.
- Pros: Keeps you active and your heart pumping, gets your creative juices flowing
- Cons: Does not appear to be very portable
The sit to stand desk will work perfectly for someone that works in a fast-paced environment and needs to stay on their feet; whereas, the adjustable standing desk will work for any long-hour work setting. It allows you to toggle between a sitting and standing position which gives your body the workout it needs to remain active. Personally, the converter was the perfect choice for my needs. I was already attached to my desk; therefore, I was not too keen on parting with it. Furthermore, desk space was not really a concern since I don’t usually need the extra space. It worked out beautifully for me and I have not regretted my choice.
Hopefully at this point, you now have a better idea as to which variation works for you. My question unto you is, “What best sit to stand desk invention have you heard about ?”
